Woodcraft Guild Courses for 2010 with Fred Buckley
In response to continued demand for courses covering a variety of subjects I am proposing the following courses between May and August this year
If you are interested in any of these courses could you please let me know as soon as possible so that I can make final arrangements on dates and times.
My email is ugotbuckleys@ozemail.com.au or phone 62886586 home and 0419250993 mobile.
I look forward to hearing from you.
1 Boxmaking #7
This course will be the seventh in the last three to four years. I propose that it run from early May to mid August for a total period of sixteen weeks. This is two weeks longer than for previous courses to allow that little extra time for participants to finish their projects. Classes run for three hours each session and there is a choice between evening classes, which run from 6-00 to 9-00pm on Tuesdays or day classes which run from 9-00am to 12noon on Wednesdays.
There will be more flexibility in the style of boxes and a range of joinery options to suit both taste and skill levels.
The cost will be $525 plus material costs of around $70. Students who wish to use their own materials may do so however the timber needs to be machined prior to the commencement of the course. I can organise this for those who do not have the equipment but who nevertheless might want to use their own materials.
2 Basic Handtool Skills#1
This course would teach fundamental woodworking skills. These include planing, setting and marking out, cutting, sawing and using chisels. In the planing exercise we will make a breadboard using handplanes to prepare the timber for jointing. Sharpening of tools will also be covered along with some guidelines on fine tuning and fettling handplanes. The course will also include some basic jointmaking exercise which will provide an opportunity to learn and develop the necessary skills required for marking and setting out, cutting and fitting quality joints for fine woodworking.
This course will run for a period of 12 weeks also beginning in early May. The cost is $400 plus materials. I would highly recommend this course for those who have recently joined and are seeking to develop and improve their woodworking skills.
3 Benchmaking #1
A number of Guild members have approached me and asked that I run a course on making a workbench. This course is, therefore, for anyone who is contemplating making their own workbench. The course will focus on the needs of each individual in terms of designing a bench which will meet their specific needs and budget. We will commence with the design and selection of material for each workbench. We will then proceed to the selection and purchase of materials, machining, joining gluing up and assembly and the selection, positioning and fitting of a suitable vice. At the end you should have a sturdy, practical, reliable, well made and beautiful workbench which will be come the central focus of your workshop.
As a part of this workshop I will be making a bench for the Guild as part of the fundraising efforts for 2010.
The course will run for a period of twelve weeks commencing early May. The venue will be at the Shed however, a number of sessions may be held in my workshop where we will have access to machinery for preparing timber.
Cost is $400. Participants will need to purchase their own timber but unless you already have some laid aside for this purpose I suggest that you delay a decision to buy material until the design has been settled in the early part of the course.
4 Plane Making 2#
A number of Guild members have also approached me and asked to run another course on making a wooden handplane. I have a number of sets of blades and cap irons left over from the previous course some years ago. These are good quality Hock brand suitable for smoothing or block planes. There is an option however to make whatever size wooden handplane you wish to make and if required we can order some more blades from HOCK in the
This course would run for a period of four weeks with three hour sessions each week.
The cost is $175 plus materials. You can purchase your own or select from the supplies I have though I need to check on prices for the blades and cap irons.
