Tool Making Workshop

This two day, hands-on and much sought after workshop run by the ACT Woodcraft Guild, is about the theory and practice of making hand tools. It covers the selection of suitable metals – especially recycled materials, the annealing, hardening and tempering processes, final finishing and polishing, and demonstrations.

Previous experience is not required. Participants should be able to complete several projects, such as a scratch awl and a marking or paring knife, or even a chisel and a small hammer, or a plane blade. Participants should indicate in advance if there are particular tools they prefer to make so as to ensure suitable materials and equipment will be available.

The tutor, Ian Percival, is a well known and experienced tool maker who has taught at numerous tool making workshops, including Master Classes at the ANU and the recent and very productive workshop at the Guild. Ian is also an accomplished woodworker and thus understands hand tools and the needs of those who use these tools, especially woodworkers. Guild members who have attended one of Ian's workshops have gone on to make an array of much treasured, hand tools
