Action

Demonstrate drop cut, a mitre cut, and appropriate use of clamps and dust extraction as well as safely securing a workpiece which lacks a flat face. Address the below aspects, demonstrating you are comfortable operating the machine safely and have an understanding of the associated safety concerns.

Machine purpose

Explain what jobs the saw is best used for and what to avoid.

Wood preparation

What are the limitations to the size of the workpiece to be cut using this machine?

What challenges does wonky timber present to safe operation?

What should not be cut using this saw and why might glued workpieces, resinous and green timber, sand and dirt in timber be an issue for its use?

Machine setup and operation

Demonstrate how to set up the saw and make

  • a 90 degree cut
  • a 45 degree mitre cut to the left and right
  • an accurate to a line cut using laser beam
  • a cut off from a round or wonky piece of timber.

While setting up for these cuts please

  • explain set up adjustment options and accuracy issues
  • explain what safety considerations you are making as you go (e.g. stance, kickback issues, direction of cut)
  • explain the use of clamps and hand placement and related issues
  • explain options for testing the accuracy of a cut and
  • dos and don’ts e.g. leave machine running, hand placement.

Member responsibilities

  • identify the relevant PPE and clothing/adornment (including hair)
  • explain what is required before leaving the saw ready for the next user including clean up obligations
  • speak to responsibilities to others including kickback issues, unsafe behaviours and misuse of machines
  • when is a member expected to seek assistance
  • what are your reporting obligations for maintenance and malfunction.
